Engineer – Radio Frequency Planning, East at MTN Nigeria

Mission

• Design and plan MTNN radio networks including 2G, UMTS, LTE, 5G, and future technologies across multiple network layers such as IBS/DAS, FEMTO/small cells, and macro solutions.
• Support cost-effective deployment of radio network coverage and capacity across the assigned region.

Description

• Support network planning functions within the region to ensure the network can accommodate projected subscriber growth over the next three months.
• Ensure multiservice sites including 2G, 3G, and 4G are properly designed and integrated with minimal complexity and efficient inter-radio access technology performance.
• Ensure network planning and site acceptance activities are completed early enough to support acquisition, construction, and implementation timelines for BTS and transmission links.
• Maintain detailed operational knowledge of all sites within the assigned region, including nominal plans, planned sites, acquisition status, build configuration, traffic levels, and performance indices.
• Monitor competitor activities and evaluate clutter data and propagation models regularly to ensure accurate reflection of the propagation environment.
• Provide technical support to departments on network and radio-related matters while maintaining the integrity of planning tools and minimizing discrepancies from the live network.

• Execute nominal radio coverage and capacity rollout design for the assigned region.
• Carry out detailed RF design in line with the nominal rollout plan.
• Monitor and analyze network performance and configuration to ensure KPIs align with regional targets.
• Continuously review traffic, utilization, and subscriber growth trends to anticipate future capacity expansion requirements.
• Review, prepare, and load cell data for site integration into the network.
• Evaluate, verify, and supervise MTNN radio network planning activities carried out by managed service vendors.
• Maintain detailed knowledge of regional site behavior and status, including:
  • Nominal plan
  • Planned sites
  • Site acquisition status
  • Work Order issuance status
  • Build configuration and status
  • Traffic levels
  • Voice traffic indices such as GoS, dropped call rate, control channel failure, handover failure rate, and half-rate
  • Data traffic volumes and related indices
• Monitor and report competitor activities.
• Review clutter data and propagation models within planning tools such as ASSET at regular intervals.
• Identify issues that may impact MTN’s business operations within the assigned region.
• Provide specialist technical support to other departments regarding network and radio-related features.
• Maintain the integrity of planning tools and records while minimizing discrepancies from the live network.

Education:

• First Degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or related discipline.
• Fluent in English.

Experience:

• 3 – 7 years’ experience in a specialized area, including experience working with others.
• Cognate RF Planning, Analysis, and solutions experience.
• Experience working with a GSM or wireless telecommunications operator.
• Experience working in a multi-vendor network environment.
• Experience with Ericsson, Huawei, and ZTE equipment will be an added advantage.
