NAI African Scholarship Programme 2026

The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) Scholarship Programme empowers students from African countries with the support they need to pursue Master’s and doctorate studies and research in Sweden.

NAI designed this program so that early career researchers based in Africa can work and develop their ongoing research at the Nordic Africa Institute. It aims to contribute to building capacity and acquisition of Africa-centric knowledge.

Participants will have the opportunity to pursue their own research projects in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities. They will also have access to the Institute’s library and be able to network within the 3-month duration of the program.

Tuition Fees in Sweden

As an international student enrolled in a Swedish tertiary institution, the tuition fees you will pay on average range from $8,100 to $14,300. The fees are determined by the respective universities. Interestingly, Swedish citizens to not pay tuition fees as they are entitled to free education in Sweden.

Eligibility Criteria

Nordic Africa Institute Scholarship

To be eligible for the NAI African Scholarship program you:

  • Must be postdoctoral researchers who will be completing PhD program within 4 years or less
  • Must be a full-time employee of an African-based university or research center
  • Must be enrolled in a doctoral program in Africa
  • Ordinarily do not have access to an international scholarship
  • Should have research topic (Social Sciences and Humanities) and with a focus on contemporary Africa. Make the research relevant to the core principles of the UN Agenda 2030.

Scholarship Benefits

The NAI scholarship is a fully funded program that offers beneficiaries a daily subsistence allowance of $40 and a grant of $250. The scholarship also provides return air-fare, accommodation, and access to a workspace. Other benefits include access to the libraries in Uppsala University and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Required Documents

  • Reference letter from HOD
  • CV, which should contain a list of your publications
  • 5-page outline of your research project, which includes the research proposal
  • 1-page work plan. This should explain your research objectives and expected results.
