The 54-year-old quit as Nigeria’s coach just a month after being appointed, following a disastrous start to the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

There were two World Cup qualifiers matches that the former Nigeria international handled, the first ended in a draw against South Africa and the second, a shock defeat to Benin Republic

Defending its reason in a statement on its official website, the Pride of Rivers posited that Finidi’s experience and expertise endeared him to the club.

Rivers United said; “Finidi brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our team, having had a distinguished playing career spanning over fifteen years.

“As a coach, Finidi has demonstrated his ability to lead teams to success, and we are confident that he will bring his expertise and passion to our club. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to a successful tenure under his leadership.”

The official presentation of Finidi to the media and club supporters will occur at the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt on Thursday.
