Job Summary

The Staff Wells Engineer is responsible for Well Engineering front end well design and planning for drilling, completions, intervention, and well abandonment activities for SNEPCo Deepwater projects. This is carried out in accordance with the eGWDP, Shell Wells Manuals, and Assurance Process.

The role includes collaborating with the well operations team to deliver performance improvement plans during drilling operations, integrating asset and subsea teams, preparing cost and time estimates, tracking performance metrics during execution, documenting after action reviews, and managing well handover to completions and production while developing improvement plans.

The position also involves leading value creation initiatives during the well delivery process, improving well design, implementing new technologies where applicable, and using digital tools to improve workflow efficiency. The engineer will also provide Well Engineering input into project concepts, opportunity framing, field development plans, and project economics.

HSSE must be integrated into the design, programming, and execution of drilling, completion, well intervention, and well abandonment activities while promoting Sustainable Development and ensuring compliance with Shell business principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out detailed technical well design using approved group standards and procedures and prepare well technical specifications documenting the basis and outcomes of the well design
  • Develop well proposals and well execution programmes for all well activities
  • Provide Well Engineering technical and operational input to support major opportunity development
  • Provide Well Engineering input into field reviews, opportunity framing, field development plans, and project economics
  • Represent the Well Engineering viewpoint in technical reviews, concept evaluations, and model assessments
  • Develop specifications and standards for HSE critical elements and technical uncertainties in well types, concepts, and technologies
  • Identify the appropriate well and optimal development option during early planning stages
  • Create and implement processes to ensure well engineering considerations and design criteria selected during planning are applied during execution
  • Ensure adherence to Management of Change procedures when programme modifications occur
  • Conduct shop visits, audits, and vendor engagements with a quality assurance approach in collaboration with contract management teams
  • Prepare Long Lead Items for projects and track delivery timelines
  • Lead incident investigations and Root Cause Failure Analysis with stakeholders and vendors to implement improvements
  • Participate in or lead After Action Reviews to capture and share lessons learned from design, planning, and operational activities
  • Utilize global wells networking to apply relevant technologies and benchmarking to improve well delivery performance and cost optimization
  • Support Contracting and Procurement teams in developing technical justification for contracts and contracting strategies where necessary
  • Work with the Wells Planning and Performance team to develop cost estimates during business planning and present the estimates
  • Track value leakage and vendor performance during execution and provide feedback to contract management teams

Requirements & Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or Science
  • Minimum of 7 years experience in oil and gas drilling and completion, with at least 5 years in wells
  • Knowledge of Well Engineering design tools such as Compass, Stress Check, Well CAT, Well Plan, and EDM
  • Understanding of the standard well delivery process
  • Experience in well engineering front end work and operations
  • Strong commitment to HSSE and Process Safety

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to influence at different organizational levels

  • Ability to work effectively with different teams
