Job Summary
The Legal Attorney I works within the Legal Services department and reports directly to the Divisional Manager, Corporate Legal Services. The role provides day to day legal services support and advice to the company and its local and international subsidiaries on legal transactions and corporate projects. The position also supports business units by managing legal needs related to transactions and assignments including drafting and reviewing contracts, providing legal opinions, dispute resolution management, and project administration support.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute legal services best practices on assigned transactions
- Provide legal advice and prepare legal opinions and agreements as required
- Draft, review and summarize provisions relating to oil and gas, commercial and operational joint venture agreements and obtain internal approvals
- Provide legal advice on policies, decisions and actions including oil and gas matters, mergers and acquisitions, employment law, contracts, litigation, leases, regulatory compliance and intellectual property
- Provide updates and interpretation of new laws and regulations and recommend necessary actions to management
- Liaise with the governance department on counterparty background checks, resolutions, corporate documentation and agreement execution
- Liaise with the tax department on compliance requirements and transaction tax implications
- Provide dispute resolution advisory services and support litigation matters in collaboration with supervising officers
- Liaise with external solicitors and obtain updates on ongoing litigation and dispute resolution matters
- Draft and review correspondence and maintain legal files and case archives
- Maintain and update legal databases in both electronic and paper formats
- Work with finance and procurement departments to ensure settlement of legal bills
Requirements & Qualifications
- First Degree in Law with a minimum of second class lower division
- Two to four years legal work experience in oil and gas or general legal practice within a reputable law firm
- Strong customer service and stakeholder engagement skills
- Ability to perform general legal analysis
- Strong verbal and written business communication skills
- Ability to plan and execute complex assignments under pressure
