The Australia Awards Scholarships for international students provide funding for them to undertake bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD studies in Australia. This is a long-term award administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Recipients will receive a full scholarship covering tuition fees, living costs, travel, and an establishment allowance.
This scheme aims to contribute to the development needs of Australia’s partner countries in line with bilateral and regional agreements. The program targets people from developing countries, particularly those in the Indo-Pacific region. Participants will study at universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions in Australia.
Eligibility Criteria
The following requirements must be met by applicants for them to be eligible for this scholarship;
- Applicants must be citizens of a country in Asia, Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East.
- Applicant must not be less than 18 years old.
- Candidate must not be a citizen of Australia, hold permanent residency or be applying for a visa to live in the country permanently.
- Candidate must not be married to, engaged to, or a de facto of a person who holds or is eligible to hold, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.
- Student should not have previously received a long-term Australia Award unless they have resided outside of Australia for twice the length of the total time that they were in Australia.
- Applicant must not be a current serving military personnel.
- Be able to satisfy all requirements of the Department of Home Affairs to hold a Student Visa. This may mean that the Program Area will need to withdraw an award offer if the recipient cannot satisfy the visa requirements.
- Candidate must not be applying for a scholarship for a course of study at an academic level less than they have already achieved (e.g., be applying for a Master’s scholarship when they already hold a PhD).

Tuition Fees
The tuition fees that students pay while studying in Australia may vary depending on their course of study. However, for bachelor’s degree program, international students typically pay between AUD 20,000 and AUD 45,000 for an academic year. Masters students tuition fees range from AUD 22,000 to AUD50,000 per year, while doctorate degree is between AUD 18,000 to AUD 42,000.
Scholarship Benefits
If you are selected to participate in the Australia Awards Scholarships, you will receive financial aid that covers full tuition fees, and return air travel–payment of a single return economy class airfare to and from Australia. The benefits include a once-only establishment allowance for accommodation expenses, textbooks, and study materials.
Beneficiaries will receive a contribution to Living Expenses (CLE), which is a stipend for basic living expenses to be paid every two weeks. You will also get the Introductory Academic Program (IAP), overseas student health coverage for the duration of the award, and fieldwork (for research awards and Masters by coursework, which have a research component where fieldwork is compulsory).
